📖 Vórtice Library in Veja SP

Once again, the beloved journalist Humberto Abdo interviews us for Veja São Paulo.

On October 15 (Saturday), starting at 3 p.m., Brazil's first homoerotic art library will be inaugurated. It is named in honor of Carlos Hermano Brasil de Almeida (★ Teresina, PI, 1968 - ✝︎ Recife, PE, 2016), who devoted three decades to assembling a large collection that included paintings, sculptures, photographs, postcards, magazines, and books that celebrate the male and gay universe.

The library opens with 300 books, most of which were donated by Fernando Cavalcante —one of Hermano's best friends—in addition to an incredible bibliography donated by five other collectors from the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. With rare titles, the library consists of photography and illustration books by renowned artists such as George Quaintance, Alair Gomes, Tom of Finland, Bruce of Los Angeles, among others.

“It is very gratifying to see the fruits of the 1st Homoerotic Art Salon, held in June, happening so quickly. Encouraging artistic and academic production in Brazil, generating a collective impact by creating a new environment for research and exchange with an extraordinary set of references, is a significant step in the construction of aesthetic sensibilities and the dissemination of themes that are still treated marginally within the field of arts in our country," report Leonardo Maciel and Paulo Cibella, creators of the project.

Located at the headquarters of Vórtice Cultural in the Vera Building, one of the most prominent artists' condominiums in São Paulo, the library is open for research and study and can be visited, initially, by appointment. Vórtice Cultural plans to keep the library alive, expanding it with new monthly acquisitions and encouraging future donations of collections on the subject.
